Not all lacing systems are created equal. While the simple crossover method you learned as a kid is great for sneakers and work boots and those chunky brogues you have sitting in your closet, dressier shoes—namely oxfords, like the pair you see above—look a whole lot better with a more minimal approach.

Enter the straight lace, which keeps the uppers looking clean while maintaining all necessary utility. Yeah, it’s a little more complicated (just a little), but you’re all grown up now, and you can handle it. You start out with the lace pulled through the bottom two eyelets, as usual. Then, on the inside of the shoe, you bring the righthand side of the lace up through the second eyelet on the right, cross it to the other side and then pull it down through the second eyelet on the left side.

Next up, the lefthand side of the lace. Thread it through the third eyelet on the left from beneath, then cross over and then down through the third eyelet on the right. Continue, alternating every other eyelet with each side of the lace, until you’re done.
